Types of tapered thrust roller bearings

Taper thrust roller bearings enable axially very compact bearing arrangements to be produced, which can carry hefty axial loads, and are insensitive to shock loads. They make single and double-direction taper thrust roller bearings. They are used for rolling mill screw-down arrangements. The screw-down approaches constitute a unique design of single-direction taper thrust roller bearing and have a full complement of rollers.

We produce single-direction taper thrust roller bearings in two designs that differ in the execution of the washers.

Bearings of the one design (1) have a shaft and housing washers with the exact dimensions. These washers both have a tapered raceway and one retaining flange. The bearings have a cage that is centered on both washers. Bearings of this design are to be preferred where hefty axial loads occur, for example, in the swivels of drilling rigs or crane hooks.

Bearings of the other design (2) have a shaft washer with the tapered raceway and retaining flange, whereas the housing washer is a plane (flat). Therefore, bearings of this design can accept minor eccentricities of the shaft concerning the housing bore without any detrimental influence on bearing performance. Except for a few sizes with a full complement of rollers, the bearings are fitted with a roller-centered cage.

Double direction taper thrust roller bearings

Taper thrust roller bearings of the double direction type are mainly used together with multi-row cylindrical roller bearings in rolling mill applications. Those bearings with a plane shaft washer(3) are the more popular as they can accommodate slight eccentricities of the shaft concerning the housing bore, of the order of the radial internal clearance of the radial bearing with which they are used. A spacer sleeve is arranged between the two housing washers. This is dimensioned so that the cover screws of the chock can be fully tightened, and no unique spring adjustment of the bearing is required.

The double direction taper thrust roller bearings with tapered raceways on the shaft and housing washers (4) generally have a higher axial load-carrying capacity than the bearings with a plane shaft washer. They are also able to locate the shaft to a certain extent radially. Double-direction tapered roller thrust bearings are usually installed with a loose fit in the roll neck and housing, and most bearings have one or two locating grooves in the shaft washer. This prevents the shaft ring from disengaging.
